Watch Burnes Center Senior Fellow Seth Harris in a conversation with Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants, and Kate Bronfenbrenner, the Director of Labor Education Research and Senior Lecturer at Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations, as they discuss the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Union Members Report for 2022. This live event aired at 10:30 AM, January 19 — just 30 minutes after the release of the report.
The Union Members Report is a critical marker of whether the union organizing successes of 2022 have pushed the needle for union membership and union density in America. Using the data provided, the panelists will take the temperature of collective action in the labor movement — analyzing the results and assessing what they mean to the state of worker power.
A United Airlines Flight Attendant since 1996, Sara Nelson has been serving as president of the AFA since 2014. In this position, she has staunchly advocated for the workers she represents, serving as the chief spokesperson on issues that impact flight attendants. Whether it’s testifying before congress, creating leadership development programs, or serving as the co-chair of then-nominees Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders’ Economic Task Force, Nelson has been a champion of collective action for over two decades.
Kate Bronfenbrenner serves as the Director of Labor Education Research and Co-Director of the Worker Empowerment Research Project at Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations. Widely regarded as a leading authority on strategies in labor union organizing, her research is primarily focused on organizing and bargaining in a global economy; analyzing the intersections of labor, race, and gender and the impact of labor law and trade policy on employment, wages, and unionization. Prior to joining the Cornell faculty, she served as an organizer and union representative with the United Woodcutters Association in Mississippi and with SEIU in Boston.
