The Power Hour #1: Labor Experts Discuss the UAW Strike, Union Density, and Prevailing Wage Laws

The Power at Work Blog is proud to present its newest featured blogcast: The Power Hour. The Power Hour is a monthly labor experts roundtable in which Burnes Center Senior Fellow Seth Harris discusses current labor news with expert guests. This special blogcast is designed to provide you with a diverse perspectives and opinions, as well as to keep you updated with the latest news and analysis. 

In this month's Power Hour blogcast, Seth is joined by Dr. Ruth Milkman, chair of the Labor Studies Department at CUNY's School of Labor and Urban Studies, and Dr. Patricia Campos-Medina, the Executive Director of The Worker Institute at Cornell University's School of Industrial & Labor Relations. Listen to their discussion about Milkman's union density study of New York State, New York City, and the nation. The panel also discusses a new Worker Institute report on prevailing wage laws and unions. The discussion includes a broader analysis of the sustainability of the current growth in worker organizing, worker activism, and strike activity, as well as a brief discussion of the future of care work and much more. 

Dr. Ruth Milkman is Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the City University of New York’s Graduate Center and she chairs the Labor Studies Department in the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies. She is a past President of the American Sociological Association and a sociologist of labor and labor movements. She has written extensively about immigrant workers; organized labor; gender, labor and inequality; auto industry restructuring; and paid family and medical leave and sick leave.

Dr. Patricia Campos-Medina is the Executive Director of The Worker Institute at Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations. She began at the Worker Institute in 2015 and took over as Executive Director in 2021. In addition to extensive experience as a field researcher and labor and leadership educator, Dr. Campos-Medina has a background in politics and legislation. She served as Assistant Political Director for SEIU, political director for Workers United, and National Legislative Director for UNITE along with numerous other positions.
