Watch Burnes Center Senior Fellow Seth Harris in conversation with Senator Jessica Ramos of the New York Senate and Debby King, a trade unionist with the National Domestic Workers Alliance.
Our guests describe the current program in New York state to help working people find child care, which is in high demand but low supply, and the impact it has on young workers, especially working moms. There are some great ideas in here to bolster worker power that unions in other states should pay close attention to.
Senator Ramos has spent her life fighting for working families, advocating for labor, and organizing her local community. Ramos was raised in Astoria, attended Queens public schools, and now lives in Jackson Heights with her two sons. A strong union advocate, Ramos worked with Build Up NYC to fight for construction, building and hotel maintenance workers in New York City. Ramos also worked with SSEU Local 371 and 32BJ SEIU, where she helped building maintenance workers, office cleaners and public schools cleaners win contracts that protected their rights, wages, and benefits.
Debby King has had a long history with the labor movement, having served in various union roles over the last five decades. Throughout her distinguished career, she has been a national proponent for better jobs for workers as a way to achieve quality healthcare. King has initiated projects that have brought millions of dollars of federal, state and private grants to support healthcare workers, the healthcare industry, and low-income and underserved communities throughout New York.
