Power at Work Blogcast #18: An Interview With LIUNA President Brent Booker

The Power At Work Blog proudly presents the fourth and final installment of our Labor Day blogcasts, an exclusive and important interview with Brent Booker, newly elected General President of the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA). Booker has been at the forefront of labor and industry initiatives to improve workplace standards and broaden middle-class career paths throughout his career.

Booker speaks with Burnes Center Senior Fellow Seth Harris about his experience as a third-generation laborer, LIUNA’s history as a union of immigrants and how they are protecting their workforce today, union density and growth, and more. Pay special attention to Booker as he talks about the future of LIUNA, because it may surprise you. The laborers have a different model than what is usually discussed in the news around brand-name companies like Amazon, Starbucks, and Trader Joe’s.

Brent Booker, a third-generation laborer, became the 11th General President of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) on May 1, 2023. A proud University of Virginia graduate, and a third-generation member of Laborers’ Local 795 in New Albany, Indiana, he has devoted his career to creating job opportunities for working people. From 2012 to 2022, Booker served as Secretary-Treasurer of North America’s Building Trades Unions.
